About Louis Weisdorf

portrait of Louis Weisdorf

Louis Weisdorf (1932–2021) emerged as one of the youngest graduates from Copenhagen’s Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1954, where he mastered architecture, industrial design, and visualization.

During the 1960s, he designed lighting for Tivoli Gardens, including the iconic Konkylie (Conch) Lamp, under the mentorship of Simon P. Henningsen.

Weisdorf crafted architectural precision and modular construction into lighting designs such as Facet, Turbo, and Ekko, using repeating geometric elements to play with light and form.

In 1972, he introduced the Multi-Lite, an innovative lamp built around user versatility and dynamic configuration. GUBI revived this design in 2016, reestablishing his legacy in Danish Modern lighting.

Weisdorf described himself as a “specialist in versatility,” embracing roles from graphic design to architecture. His lifelong curiosity led him to adopt computer-aided design early, continuing his design journey into the digital age.

Today, his work endures through icons like the Multi-Lite and Turbo, which represent his ability to blend geometric rigor with sculptural play and remain endlessly inspiring.
