The 1972 Pendant exemplifies Paavo Tynell’s poetic approach to materiality, pairing natural textures with refined brass detailing in a design that feels both organic and enduring. Created during the height of his mid-century practice, the pendant reflects Tynell’s sensitivity to craftsmanship and his gift for transforming humble materials into luminous works of art.

The conical shade is meticulously handcrafted from bamboo slats, hand-sewn into a pleated mat and carefully fastened to a delicate wire frame. A linen liner is set between the bamboo layers, directing light downward while allowing a warm, diffused glow to filter gently through the slats and upward into the surrounding space. This layered construction produces a soft interplay of light and shadow, enriching the atmosphere without glare.

True to Tynell’s signature style, polished brass elements provide structural clarity and subtle ornamentation. Beneath the bulb, a fabric diffuser tempers the light further, while a decorative brass finial introduces a sculptural accent that subtly shapes the illumination below.  The 1972 Pendant stands as a testament to Tynell’s mastery of blending nature, craft, and mid-century elegance into a timeless ceiling fixture suited to serene residential and hospitality interiors.
