About 9209 Table Lamp

9209 Table Lamp by Paavo Tynell. Designed in Finland, 1940s for GUBI.

First introduced in the 1940s, the 9209 Table Lamp reveals Paavo Tynell’s distinctive approach to light, form, and ornament. Often referred to by its nickname “Kypärä,” the Finnish word for helmet, the lamp features a spun brass shade held in place by a curved brass arm. Its sculptural silhouette is at once functional and expressive, embodying Tynell’s ability to merge industrial precision with organic charm.

Decorative perforations punctuate the shade in a triangular pattern—a hallmark of Tynell’s work. These details are achieved through specialized hand-punching techniques that require careful tooling and expert craftsmanship. While guiding the light downward, the perforations also allow fine points of illumination to escape, casting a soft, textured glow and creating a starlit effect across surrounding surfaces.

Tynell, a master metalworker and co-founder of Taito Oy, helped shape Finland’s early modern design language. His lighting designs, celebrated for their elegance and technical subtlety, often incorporated natural motifs and poetic gestures. The 9209 Table Lamp reflects these sensibilities with quiet sophistication.
