About BL10 Wall Lamp – Ø16
Bestlite BL10 Wall Lamp by Robert Dudley Best, produced by GUBI. Designed in Britain, 1930.
Robert Dudley Best designed the BL10 Wall Lamp as part of his groundbreaking Bestlite series. Influenced by the Bauhaus movement, he created a lamp that combines precision engineering with understated elegance. While steering Best & Lloyd into modern design, Best sought to introduce lighting that was both functional and aesthetically progressive. Today, Danish design house GUBI continues to produce the Bestlite collection, preserving its authenticity while ensuring it meets contemporary standards.
The BL10 features a swan-neck arm, smooth pivot joints, and a bell-shaped shade. Because these elements adjust with ease, the lamp directs light exactly where it is needed. This makes it ideal for reading corners, bedside illumination, or task lighting in living and working spaces. Furthermore, its combination of black semi-matt powder coating with polished chrome delivers a striking contrast.
From the moment Architects’ Journal hailed the Bestlite as Britain’s first Bauhaus-inspired design, it became a favorite among architects and design enthusiasts. Winston Churchill famously used a Bestlite model at his desk, which reinforced the series’ status as a design icon. Today, the BL10 continues in production under GUBI, holding its place in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Design Museum in London.
As part of the enduring Bestlite collection, the BL10 Wall Lamp remains a timeless expression of British modernism. Its adaptable form and historical significance ensure it suits both contemporary interiors and spaces that celebrate classic design heritage.
