About Shiva Vase
The Shiva vase was designed by Ettore Sottsass when he was travelling to Barcelona for love in 1971. It captures the essence and cultural vision of the bold and provocative Radical Design movement in Italy in the early 1970s.
He encountered many cultures, religious symbolism, and inspiration on his travels. The smooth, curving body references the Hindu god Shiva, who was often represented by a phallic ‘Lingam’ devotional sculpture. It has a clean symmetry with its bright colour playing across the form with a brilliant glaze. The Shiva vases are ‘small architectures... like little monuments’, creating energy wherever placed.
Capsule Global pays homage to the same boundary-pushing and experimental movement, and collaborates with BD for a special edition of the Shiva.
