Portsmouth Bench Backless

About Portsmouth Bench Backless

Originally a commission to design to design a set of new choir stalls for Portsmouth Cathedral, the Portsmouth Bench came to life which was then adapted into the Backless Portsmouth Bench. Oak, while heavy, is possessed of an inherent strength that allows sections of the design to be very thin. The rigorously spare overall form and details evolved from the idea that the design should have a quality of anonymity - neither too strikingly contemporary, nor too obviously traditional - that would both contrast with and complement the architecture of the cathedral’s interior, parts of which date back to 1180.
